About Natural Burial

Natural burial is something humans have done for tens of thousands of years. It is returning a loved one back to the earth in its most simple form; directly into the ground without using impermeable barriers or preservatives, and allowing for the natural decomposition of the body in the ground. The decomposition process releases nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorous into the surrounding soil, supporting life through the resident soil microbes and plants that utilize the nutrients.

La Puerta Natural Burial Ground is a 40 acre private, serene, natural burial ground with majestic views. Located only an hour south of Albuquerque at the base of the Manzano Mountains, it lies adjacent to 14,000 acres of open space, preserved for future generations.

Families care for each other in life and we encourage families to take that final loving step and care for loved ones in death by participating in lowering the body into the grave, adding flowers or other natural mementos.

Families may plan and direct a graveside service or arrange a graveside service through a funeral home. Funeral and memorial services may also be held as customary in one’s church, synagogue, mosque, or temple.

The burial site is recorded with GPS coordinates, the surface is restored, and native plants and/or stone may commemorate the site.

Families may use any funeral home that agrees to the guidelines of
La Puerta Natural Burial Ground.
